Things seemed to be just falling comfortably into place. The Dilaminous that every student of Galbadia knew and feared had finally been rewarded for his efforts, and as soon as the Holy Mission comes around, the world would know my name. Now that all the players had been revealed to me, I had already decided how I was going to play the game. Having great battle experience, I knew just how to hold my own in battle. It never began with one on one, even Stevens. You had a hunting party, looked for weakness and hunted your enemy, taking him or her apart, piece by piece. That is how we had always done it, and just because things were now on a much grander setting than I was used to, I wasn't planning on doing anything different. The last few days had passed me by, more or less uneventful as all I could think about was besting three opponents and being crowned the tournament champion.
My friends had left me to my own devices, which for now at least was exactly what I had expected of them. Preparing takes discipline, a level of which could not possibly be reached with disturbances. The three morons would be too much of a distraction, and I was sure that I could get them to leave me alone if I sent my right hand woman away too. As I sat on my dormitory desk, having already banned my roommate from entering for the past two days, I had in front of me five files which I had already delved through several times, knowing precisely what I was looking for. I had familiarized myself with the five names and four faces, and in my head the game of chess had already commenced. The Battle didn't start on Sunday, it began when they first decided who I would be fighting at the Holy Mission. The mind games were in place, and each of my enemies had been sent out their very own targets which would no doubt be their undoing. To further emphasize my control over these so called opponents, I decided it best that each should receive a letter which they would hopefully all receive a day or two before we were all scheduled to meet.
I began to put pen to paper, being every so careful to put great emphasis on an oversized G for Gresh's name.
Gresh,
I am sure, having spent some time in Galbadia that you have come across my name from time to time. I know you, having paid great attention for some time and would like to extend an invitation to you. You have an official request to become one of my followers, taking it upon yourself to attend to what I refer as my business. If, however, you feel the need to decline, then I find myself in a rather uncomfortable position. I take these offers rather seriously, and would be somewhat offended if one was to reject such an offer. The Holy Mission would be a lot friendlier place if you had an ally, and after I win you could take part in my extended celebratory party, where all my friends will be invited.
I will give you some time, however short, to mull it over and you can get back to me when and how you like. Be warned, though. I have a feeling that the three Balamb Garden students might be banding together to take us down before the tournament, so you would surely want someone to look out for your interests, no?
Yours earnestly,
Dilaminous
I felt relatively happy with my faux invitation, which I was certain he would at least be intelligent enough to see it for what it really was; a threat. Moving onwards, I produced my next sheet of paper and immediately began scrawling Muthrik's name.
Muthrik,
You must be thrilled to be the only student from Trabia Garden participating in the Holy Mission tournament, and I would be too, if I were you. Here's the thing though; traditionally tournaments like these are one by prestigious winners who go on to achieve great things. Now I don't know about you, but I am already well on my way towards my destiny. On Sunday, anyone who comes up against me will not stand a chance, so I suggest you take it upon yourself to lay down for me if you are unfortunate enough to face me. If you do, then you will receive mercy from me and can escape from the competition unharmed. I will even allow you to keep you dignity by hitting you once, hard, so that you can sell my attack and make everyone think you at least tried. Regardless, you know that you cannot possibly win, so I highly suggest you think my proposition over.
Yours faithfully,
Dilaminous
As I didn’t actually know Muthrik and hadn’t even heard of him before the tournament, I had no idea how he would react to such a letter, but I didn’t really care. I just hoped I had annoyed him, really. If I could get even the tinniest bit inside his head, then the damage had already been done, and I would have the higher ground if I were to do battle with him. Next on my list was the ever noble Thadeous, the man who had a reputation in Balamb Garden of being their prize know-it-all. This one was going to be fun.
Thadeous,
I hear from various sources in your Garden that you are an overachiever in all things. You excel in battles and physical tests as well as having a good edge in theoretical exercises. Unfortunately for you, this is not a game. The Holy Mission tournament requires something more than good grades to get the best of your opponents. After all is said and done, one person will be victorious. This person will be the epitome of what it is to be a SeeD. Make no mistake about it… I do not think you a worthy of the uniform, and come Sunday I will take it upon myself to put you in your place and rough you up a bit. If you are to battle me, you will find yourself in my way of the prize and I do assure you, that is not somewhere you want to be. I hope you get my letter soon. Write back, we can be pen pals. I look forward to meeting you.
Yours sincerely,
Dilaminous.
Now that I had finished writing to the boys, I felt it was time to get the aftershave out and give the next two hints of sensuality. Most girls that saw me wanted me, and I didn’t see why these would be any different. I decided it would be best to start with the goody two shoes, so that if I had any smut in my mind, it would be saved for the naughty sister.
Amne,
I know that Balamb has treated you fairly, and the tutors obviously thought highly of you if they were to select you for the tournament. However, if you ever wish to escape from the mundane life of Balamb, I will assure you that Galbadia has everything you would look for in a home; me. Perhaps I am forward, but having studied your file and your picture, I must say I am intrigued by how two people can look identical, yet you scream out to me as being far more attractive than your sister. Oh, wait, this was Amne, right? Sorry, I wrote to the wrong sister. You are mediocre at best and I am afraid to say I don’t think I have the space to accommodate YOU. Still, I do hope that we can be best of friends. Kiss kiss.
Yours truthfully
Dilaminous
From what I had heard from Balamb, there was a possibility that I could have shaken her up and aggravated her by the contents of that letter. Still, all I could do was hope as I took out my final sheet of paper and began to write.
Renea,
I know we haven’t met but I would really like to. I have an idea of a way that we could have an edge on the more serious competition, so I would like to meet up with you on Sunday and we could discuss that some more. In the mean time, I was thinking about including a photo of something I carry around in my pocket for girls like you, but unfortunately it was too large an object to fit in such a small photo. Regardless, I wish to see you soon, as I said. We’d have heaps to talk about and even more things to do that don’t require talking. But if you don’t want to, that’s cool. I’m not holding my breath.
Yours forever
Dilaminous.
Having looked over the letters and assessed them all carefully, I decided that it was in my best interest all around not to send them. But then I thought, screw that, I’ll send them anyway. If my competition were to be taken seriously, then the mind games had to start.
