My wound had been cleaned, and as the doctor began to bandage my shoulder, I couldn’t help but cringe. This of course caused extra irritation from my face, where I had been kicked. The doctor seemed to notice the distress on my face, and she flashed me a reassuring smile.
“Don’t worry, darling.” She said warmly. “The hi-potion that I gave you should do the trick. Unfortunately, the attack will leave you a scar there though.” she said with sincerity. Then, as she produced yet another bandage as an addition to those that had already become a temporary part of me, she added “I can’t believe no one saw who did this to you.” I gave a little sarcastic laugh. Of course nobody would say anything after seeing what my sister was capable of to her own flesh and blood. If she was showing mercy, then imagine what she would do to someone she was indifferent about. Not that I was any different from them. I told the staff that I was struck from behind and that they had ran off before I was able to see who it was. What I didn’t understand was why I hadn’t told them that it was Renea who had assaulted me. It certainly wasn’t because I was afraid of her. I guessed that in spite of what she had just done… I didn’t want her to get kicked out of Garden. Or maybe it was because I wanted to fight her in the Holy Mission tournament and get my own justice. I wasn’t sure, but I knew I had to deal with her myself without running off and crying to the headmaster. What had surprised me was that I knew she disliked me but I didn’t think even she would fight that dirty.
“Okay you’re all ready to go.” the doctor said, smiling at me one last time for the day.
“Thank you.” I said as I wasted no time leaving the infirmary.
Roth was waiting for me outside, looking very anxious and worried. As soon as he caught me, he was in my face, giving me no room to move.
“Are you okay!? I can’t believe someone did this to you!” He said with the worry clear in his voice.
“I’m fine, thank you.” I lied, giving him my fake smile which he always seemed to buy into.
“Is there anything I can do for you?” he asked, not knowing what else to say. I shook my head. “Well I’m going to find the wimp who did this to you!” he said, not trying to hide his frustrations.
“Don’t worry about it Roth. Sh… they will get what is coming to them.” I replied, picturing my perfect revenge in the tournament. Roth took me by my good arm and helped me as we walked towards the library.
“I spoke to your sister today.” he said in a way that sounded like he was waiting for the right time to tell me. My jaw instantly tightened. “I think she is a lot softer than people think. She even… cried.” Roth smiled, tilting his head. So it seemed he was under her spell.
“She was faking.” I said to him bluntly. He looked at me as if I was being too harsh on her. He thought I was wrong, obviously, and it irritated me. “I know my sister.” Sometimes I think that people forget that I actually grew up with her and know her better than anyone. But he looked at me, still, as if I had the wrong end of the stick. He shook his head.
“Please don’t be like that. You know she cares about you.” he said, sounding very much like I might be the bad sister. I glared at him. He had struck a nerve with me and there was no way I was going to take any of this.
“You speak to her once in a blue moon and you spend every day with me and yet here you are making me out to be the bad guy” I yelled.
“No, Amne, It’s not like that.” He said defensively, holding his hands out as if I might lash out. “I just think that this hard shell she walks around behind is just a mask and…” I didn’t let him finish, not being in the mood for him to try and defend his crush. I had had enough.
“You are meant to be my friend, Roth. Not hers! But just because you have a crush on her, you take her side!” I said angrily. “You always say to everyone that me and her look just alike but I don’t see you drooling all over me! Should I straighten my hair and walk around as if I own the place and treat everyone beneath me? Then maybe you, and everyone else, will fall in love with me!” That was enough for me, I didn’t stick around for his response. As soon as I had finished with my little rant, I turned away from him and stormed off towards my room, just hoping that he wasn’t following me.
As soon as I reached the safe haven of my dorm room, I slammed the door shut behind me and I just laid on my bed looking up at the ceiling, just glad that my room mate hadn’t come back yet as I didn’t think I could even deal with talking to her right now. She wasn’t mean or anything but all I had to do was look a little sad and she would want all the gossip. Sometimes she was a lot of fun to talk to but I couldn’t be asked right now, after all, that wouldn’t be very comforting. Time seemed to pass all too quickly, and when I finally looked at the clock I saw that it had been about two hours since I had yelled at Roth and I was starting to feel a little guilty about it all. He didn’t deserve that at all. He has been a good friend to me through everything and I just took out all my frustrations out on him, when he wasn’t really the person I was angry with. I had a lesson in 10 minutes and Roth was going to be there so I would have my chance to apologise to him there.
I walked into the class room as soon as I arrived, fearing that I might have been late. The instructor wasn’t there, yet but felt I had all eyes on me as soon as I walked in to the room. Some eyes were full of pity and I even noticed one of my class mates who saw what happened with me and Renea. She looked at me as if she was really sorry that she hadn’t said anything because she was overly frightened of Renea. I put my head down and hastily made my way to my desk… next to Roth. He was looking down, it seemed that he didn’t have a clue of what to say or do. I simply sat next to him, just hoping that he would look up.
“Roth I’m really sorry I yelled at you. I didn’t mean to take my frustration out on you.” I said carefully, not wanting to sound like I might bite his head off again. He looked up at me with a smile.
“It’s okay, I understand what’s going on.” He said, pausing to look deep into my eyes as if he understood everything and it was all now clear to him. I knew he would understand. “You’re in love with me.” he said while smiling politely as if he was about to do the “Just friends speech.”
“You what? Do you really believe that?” I asked, lost for any other words due to the shock of what he had just explained to me.
“Well yeah, I can’t believe I didn’t see the signs before.” He said, bringing up his hand so he could tick of his list with his fingers. “You are always with me, and now I see why you dislike Renea so much. It’s because you’re jealous that I have feelings for her and you wish I felt that way about you.” he said. I honestly couldn’t believe what had just come out of his mouth. For a few seconds I just stared at him, with my mouth hanging wide open in stunned silence until I couldn’t help myself any longer. I found it all so funny I just had to laugh.
“Don’t try and hide it. I’m your friend, you can tell me anything.” said Roth now worried that he might have upset me, but also looking confused as to why I was laughing so hard.
“I see you as a friend and that is it Roth. I just took all my bottled up frustrations out on you.” I explained, laughing as I was talking. “But no, for your information, I don’t have a crush on you, Roth.” I finished, wiping the hilarity tears from my eyes.
“What about you saying if you change your hair maybe I would be in love with you?” He asked, clearly confused about how different his assumption was from the truth.
“I meant everyone in general, Roth.” I said. He looked at me as if he still wasn’t convinced, but that didn’t matter. I wasn’t going to hold his stupidity against him. I knew the truth and it wasn’t as if I had a great reputation in Balamb Garden anyway. Still, I didn’t want to have to worry about all this drama. I was going to leave for the Island Closest to Heaven the morning after tomorrow and the Holy Mission was more important to me at this point than anything else.
