“Oh well.” I said as I turned with my head hanging down, dejected, and left the counter of the cafeteria.
“We should be getting some more hot dogs in soon.” The lady at the counter called back at me as I sulked off. I couldn’t understand? Why don’t they order more hot dogs in? It was only 7.30 and they’re already out. Couldn’t they see that there were more then two students here in this Garden to feed. Most days I wouldn’t really have cared too much, it’s just that these last few days I have just been more hungry than normal. It could have something to do with fact that I have been putting a lot more effort into my training lately, so I‘ve been using up all of my energy a lot faster than usual. It’s because I so desperately wanted to be picked for the Holy Mission tournament that Trabia Garden was to host. There seemed to be a lot of people who wanted to take part in this tournament just as much as me, plus I am just a student and I know that there are a lot of exceptionally strong fighters wanting to take part. I’m guessing that all the SeeD’s will be guaranteed places too, which doesn‘t leave much room for the likes of me. Looking back at the menu, it seemed everything else available today was just inedible, so I forgot all about the fact that my stomach was begging me for some food and make my way to the training centre.
Once I had reached the training centre, I looked around for my first victim. I pulled out my gunblade as soon as I saw my first grat, which wasn’t exactly what I came here for, but I needed all the experience I could get. It didn’t see me at first but I wasn’t going to wait until it did. Instinctively, I held my gunblade high above my head just before I struck the heavy blade into it’s torso, following the strike by firing one shot to finish it off. As I watched it fall, I reminded myself that today I wasn’t just looking for a simple grat to fight. No, today I was specifically looking for the biggest monster available here to kill; The T-rexaur. Before coming I had stocked up on as many sleeps as I could. Last time I had fought a T-rexaur, I ran out of sleeps and I ended up being taken to the infirmary. I was lucky that Zell was helping some new SeeD there that day, because there was no way just anyone could have finished off a T-rexaur with just one hit. But today was going to be different; I was not going to be defeated today. It wasn’t long before I found a T-rexaur by the bridge. I stepped carefully with my gunblade in one hand and a sleep ready to use. As I approached, the T-rexaur lifted its head and looked my way, with it’s jaw open ready to swallow me whole. It’s gigantic feet made the ground shake which made me loose my balance. I casted sleep on it before he had the chance to reach me and the t-rexaur stopped right in front of me, I could practically see the Z’s as he slipped into slumber. I then struck the monster with my sharp blade while the shot flew out of it. Remembering that I had to keep safe too, I continued to constantly cast sleep on it. Eventually, I could see that it was getting weak so I decided that casting water on the t-rexaur would finish it off, but before I could see what had happened I just saw Renea standing next to the t-rexaur with blood on her blade as the t-rexaur fell to the ground.
“Sorry sis, I just couldn’t help myself.” Renea said with a grin. The words were stolen from my mouth, all I could do was glare at her with fire burning in my eyes. She had just stolen all of my exp, and all I could do was stare at her, watching the twisted grin spread across her face.
“Oh, don’t look so mad.” Renea said. How could I not be mad? She knew how much my training meant to me, and she knew that the Holy Mission tournament was any day now. I had next to no hope of being picked now; that t-rexaur was my only hope. If she wasn‘t my sister, I don‘t know what I‘d do. My anger at her seemed to surge through my body, while she just looked at me as if she was finding it hard not to laugh. What did I expect though? That she would say sorry? No, she has never said sorry to me in our whole lives.
“You knew I needed that experience and yet here you are again taking it away from me.” I said with anger in my voice. “Why do you always have to do this to me!” After I said this, it seemed she just couldn’t hold it in any more because she burst into laugher, so loud that I think the whole of garden could hear her, as if she couldn’t rub it in enough.
“You really make me laugh.” She said while turning from me, and as she left I could even see tears in her eyes from laughing at me. Once I had allowed myself to cool down after I watched her leave, I looked at the time.
“Oh great! Now I am late for my lesson.” I sighed.
After getting scolded by my instructor for my lack in punctuality I tried to keep my head down for the rest of the lesson. Whenever I had ever been told off it always had something to do with Renea. I could never understand what she had against me. We are sisters after all, we’ve grown up together and yet she seems to have always had this unexplainable hatred towards me. Despite all that, I wasn’t going to give up on her just yet. I had always believed there must be some redeemably feature towards her, even if I hadn’t seen it for myself and that was what I was hanging on to. Hanging on by a thread.
“Hey Amne.” I heard the voice from next to me say. I looked up to see Roth looking at me with worry clear in his eyes.
“Are you okay?” he asked
“Yeah, I’m fine.” I said, offering him a fake smile.
“How did your training go?” he asked. I looked back down at my desk.
“Renea?” I didn’t even have to say anything. It happened too often, I don’t even know why I get so upset about it.
“Okay, I have here a list of all those who have been picked to take part in the Holy Mission.” the instructor announced, breaking our conversation. I looked up right away, “Oh please, please let it be me.” I thought to myself as I clenched my fists.
“Oh, it seems we have three people representing Balamb Gardens. The first is Thadeous.” she announced as all of my class mates clapped there hands, even though he wasn‘t in our class. That was one spot taken already.
“I could have guessed it would have been him.” I heard Roth say under his breath.
“The second to make it though is Renea.” she said, though she didn‘t seem overly thrilled as she said her name. I only heard one or two people clap for Renea as the rest of the class looked around nervously and were talking to the person next to them. My whole body tensed up. Renea? She doesn’t even come to her classes. All she does is go around the training centre stealing peoples experience. I could feel Roth’s eyes on me. I could tell he was at a loss for anything to say to me.
“And the third is… Amne.” She said, with disbelief as she mouthed my name. My own mouth just hung open and all I could hear was Roth cheering and calling my name followed shortly after by the faint clapping and cheering from the rest of the class though it was difficult for my mind to register the sounds around me. I had been pick, I couldn’t believe it. After that, I seemed to have lost the rest of the lesson because before I knew it I was being dragged out of the class room by Roth.
“Amne you’re in the tournament!” Roth yelled as he was jumping around me with glee. I think this was the first moment I smiled all day. My smile was even so big that it made my cheeks hurt.
“I can’t believe it!” I said still with my goofy smile.
“You have to train even harder now, Amne if you want a chance at winning!” Roth said with enthusiasm. At that very point my smile fell as the reality hit me, hard. He was right, but how could I train any harder than I had been. And how could I stand a chance at winning? What if I have to fight Renea, for instance? I had never even won a fight against Renea before. She is no doubt a lot stronger then me. And what about the rest of the competition? It seemed to me, all at once as if I was drowning, in over my head.
“Do you think there is a chance I could win against Renea?” I asked seriously, but I already knew what he was thinking. I knew what everyone was thinking.
“Well… if you tra… I’m not sure.” he said, and I could see he was holding back to spare my feelings. No. I wasn’t going to be negative. I couldn’t let myself be. I could beat my sister, I knew I could… Somehow.
“Amne has no chance.” I heard someone say from behind me as they walked past. I think they must have wanted me to hear. How nice of them.
“Why was Amne picked, I know she’s good but not that good.” someone else who was with them said. Roth looked at me with pity in his eyes.
“Don’t listen to them.” he said, touching my shoulder in a comforting fashion. Then I saw her, my sister. As normal all the best looking boys in garden were all flocked around her. It only comforted me a little to see some other girls shoot her with dirty looks. Renea saw me and dismissed the boys. The all looked at me as they past, clearly judging me.
“Renea is the better looking sister.” I heard someone say under their breath.
“There twins! Identical twins!” Roth shouted. But he didn’t have to say anything anymore. I didn’t really care that people saw her as the better looking one, even if we did look EXACTLY alike, the only difference being the way that we wore our hair. Though it was funny that Roth had said that considering he had the biggest crush on Renea.
“Hear about my good news, sis?” Renea asked.
“Hear about mine?” I said smugly. She just smiled at me. “This is one battle you’re not going to win. I hope we come up against each other just so I can prove that I am just as strong as you.” I said. Renea just looked bored and simply walked away. You’ll see, I thought, everyone will.
