The Royal Summons was over and I had won my battle against Thadeus, the strongest Burmecian warrior I had ever encountered. It was a battle like none I'd ever had before and I'd learnt much about strengths and weaknesses, but it had also left me with much to think about so after the closing ceremony I returned to my private quarters and sat with a mug of coffee, contemplating the days events. When I left for the arena there had been a group of men waiting to ambush me, Thadeous among them, who were they and more importantly why was Thadeous with them? Was it his plan to ambush me and had he hired them? I had trouble believing that, I'd always known the Burmecians to be an honourable race, and he'd helped me deal with the attackers, a more likely answer was that he'd been coerced into the situation but for what reason?
There was a knocking at the door, "Enter" I called, and Sir Valiant walked in, I stood to attention but he waved his hand at me "At ease Alexis, I haven't come for a formal discussion"
I made him a coffee and we sat at my table "Congratulations Alexis, that was a magnificent fight, one that I expect to go down in the history books, and did you witness Elizza's battle with Princess Bunny, such strong summoning power, she will make a powerful mage one day. There are many people hoping to congratulate you, why did you return so early?"
"I needed time to think, do you know who those men with Thadeous were?"
Sir Valiant smiled, "No, we found no trace of them after the tournament but I shouldn't worry too much, I think they've learnt their lesson and if they do decide to go after Thadeous for his turning on them I'm confident that they will once again feel the sharp end of his axe" Sir Valiant sipped his coffee and a frown crossed his face.
"You didn't come just to congratulate me did you?" I asked, having served under him for so long I had come to recognise when something was weighing down on him, now was one of those times.
"I need to talk to you about something I've been putting off for many years, however after your performance today I cannot justify holding back this information any longer, I have a lead on your childhood, it's not much but it may be the key to understanding how you came to be with us" Sir Valiant looked at me, analysing my reaction, I had not been expecting this but it was something I had thought before and I had already decided that I didn't need to know, I had been given away which was all that mattered, my life was in the army and my duty was to my country, not chasing my past. I just looked at Sir Valiant, returning his stare, he decided to continue.
"When you were found, there was a parcel in your basket, it contained a letter and this," he held up a pendant made of a flat disc of stone, I took it and examined it, in the centre of the stone was an engraving that looked like a pentagram and at the tip of each point was a gem of different colour, blue, red, green, yellow and white. Sir Valiant then handed me a sheet of parchment, yellowed with age, I looked at it but I did not understand the words "It is written in an ancient language none of our scholars had ever seen before, until recently we thought it would forever go untranslated but then Queen Garnet suggested we send it to Dr Tot in Treno and after many months he sent back this," he handed me another piece of parchment, this time with words I could read;
Dear Trojite,
I hope you will someday read this letter and forgive me for what I have done, I did not want to give you away but it was the only way I could guarantee your safety. I leave you this pendant as a sign of your birth place and this letter as a sign of my undying love, I pray to the Gods that some day you will return to me but know in my heart that can never happen, I will love you always
Your Mother, Fravera
I felt something inside of me, a spark, I felt it building and the interest in my past that I had not felt since my childhood was suddenly burning again, as strong as the flames from Ifrit himself, my mother had not abandoned because she did not love me but to protect me, her last act of love, the last act of love I had ever known, despite being too young to comprehend it.
"How does this help though?" I asked, "All I have is a pendant and a name, if I were to investigate I would not know where to start or what to look for"
"That is the significance of the pendant," Sir Valiant replied "Dr Tot said the language in the letter is a forgotten tongue of the Lost Continent, and the pendant is an ancient symbol of a city lost long ago known as Wiltendra"
"Wiltendra" I repeated, "I thought that was a myth, a fairytale told to children to liven their imagination"
"It appears the fairytale has some foundation in truth, I will leave now, you have much to think on but know this, whatever you decide to do you have my support" with Sir Valiant rose and left.
What would I do I asked myself? Should I follow this information and search for my history or continue my duties, repaying my debt to the country that had taken me in and protected me from whatever had threatened me as an infant…
