My eyes opened hoping that it was all just a dream. I sat up on my bed and looked around my small room, trying to run through the day that had passed. Princess Garnet wouldn’t pick someone as inexperience in fighting as me. No, it has to be a misunderstanding. Maybe it was a different Elizza? Yes that must be it. My thoughts were then interrupted when I heard a knock at my door. My mother then came in looking drained as she did all the time nowadays.
“Elizza are you okay.” she asked. I looked at her trying to understand how could she make me go through all this. My head fell. “Darling I know that you’re mad at us, but we’re just trying to look out for you.” She explained.
“Mum, there are enough trained fighters on the theatre ship. But, just look at Ruby. I don’t think she has ever been in a fight in her life and yet she’s fine.” I said.
“I know but I would feel a lot better if you could fight for yourself. You don’t know, they might leave you.” she said as I fell into my pillow.
“I can’t fight!” I cried.
“Elizza why don’t you try using your..” I jumped in before she could finish for I knew what she was going to say, and I didn’t want to hear it.
“No! I don’t want anything to do with it!” I yelled. She stood up and left the room. I laid there and began to think in silence. Perhaps my dream to be part of the theatre is not worth this? This is all very frightening. I’m not anywhere near as strong as all the great fighters of the world; I don’t think I am even close to the weak fighters.
I heard my father’s voice calling me from down stairs. Slowly, I rolled off of my bed, not really wanting to leave my room. Maintaining my slow pace, I purposely dragged my feet down each step. Then I saw him; it was Zane standing near the door with a big smile on his face.
“Are you ready for some more training?” he asked. I looked away for a moment, trying to think the situation over. It did occur to me that if I was ever going to do some training it would be best that I do it with him helping me. Turning on the spot, I run back into my room to get the dagger he had given me the day before. I didn’t feel as worried as I was yesterday or even as worried as I was just a few minutes ago. I felt safe with Zane.
We left my little home and walked through the streets of Alexandria. It seemed that everyone was bustling around excitedly getting ready for the Royal Summons. There were children playing games, pretending to be Sir Vivi and Sir Steiner. I could even see a little girl with tin foil on her head taking the part of Queen Garnet and asking Sir Zidane to save her. The adults were putting up decorations and moving their stalls from the main street. I could also hear people my age complaining to each other about the fact that it should have been them picked for the tournament. I felt my cheeks burn red as my head dropped. They where right; it should be them competing, not me.
“You were picked for a reason.” said Zane, reading my mind. For a moment I had forgotten he was here with everything around me.
“Queen Garnet and her Royal court do not just pick anyone for this event. There is a reason you were selected. It might not be apparent to you now, but that doesn‘t mean there isn‘t one.” Zane said, his voice reflecting his belief in me. “Now lets go see if we can find out what it is that makes you so special.” He added with his trademark smile.
My mind seemed to wander as we left the busy town and arrived at the edge of the evil forest.
