"Wake up you two." I was being shaken by my shoulder, I looked up to see the head doctor's face inches from mine and to my right Alice was awake already, a guilty look on her face.
"What time is it?" I asked, sunlight was filtering through a net curtain covering a window, I'd only been meaning to rest my eyes when those military personnel had sent us away but it looked like I, and Alice, had slept right though till morning.
"If you must know it's quarter past seven. Now it's my turn to ask a question, where the hell is my patient?" She was getting angry but I was confused and her shouting wasn't helping.
"Which one lady? But for your information I been asleep so I ain't seen nothing" Why was she asking me all these questions? The only patient I knew about was…
"Cadet Gresh is missing from his bed and the helicopter he arrived in has been destroyed, you two are the only visitors he's had so I know you're involved somehow!" as she said this she was poking me in the chest, I didn't like being accused of lying and struggled to stay calm. I stood up to my full height, leaning over her, willing her to touch me again
"I already told you I don't know where he is!" I shouted back at her, Alice placed a hand on my arm "Chad…" she said, tears were streaming down her face. "What is it?" I asked, more subdued, now was not the time to make a scene.
"What about those people who came last night?" she said, her voice barely more than a whisper.
"You're right," I turned back to the doctor "Three people came looking for Gresh last night, they were from Garden, he was meant to be demonstrating some prototype weapons for them, two guys and a woman"
"Well he's not here now so I suggest the two of you think pretty fast about where he might have gotten to because as the Chief Medical Practitioner of this unit it's my responsibility to inform his Garden that he's gone AWOL, I suggest you both come with me." She turned around and led us through the corridors. I put my arm around Alice and guided her along, she was now sobbing into her hands and I couldn't help feeling sorry for her, she was Gresh's oldest friend and innocent of any blame in this, I hoped for the sake if their friendship that this wasn't another one of his stupid pranks.
"What do you mean missing?" I could hear Ms Franco's voice over the speaker phone in the doctor's office. I looked around, we were in a large office sat at a big wooden desk, the name plate in the middle said Dr Stanton, confirming the name she'd given earlier. The office walls weren't visible due to numerous bookshelves full of various medical journals and reference books, and charts detailing all the major parts of the body and the ways in which injuries could be healed.
"I mean he's gone missing Ms Franco, I checked on him during my last rounds of the night and this morning when I went to his bed he wasn't there. I do however have the last two people to see him with me." Dr Stanton finished, I took this as my cue to start talking.
"Hey Ms Franco it me, Chad"
"And who is the other person with you?" she asked.
"Alice, she's a civilian and close friend of Gresh" I responded.
"The girl from the helicopter?"
"That's her, look I know all this looks bad but it isn't, three people came for Gresh from the UGMS last night, I expect he's with them showing off those new pistols, you know what he's like with new toys" I was grinning at the phone, Ms Franco would realise this was just a misunderstanding.
"Think carefully Chad, what were their names?" her tone took on a more serious note and I frowned as I tried to remember everything had happened.
"Uh, there was a Ms Brandon, a Mr Forrester and the other one was a Mr…"
"Smith," Ms Franco interrupted me "All 3 were found dead this morning in their rooms at Trabia Garden, they were due to come over to the arena this afternoon for the demonstration. No one is aware of this other than senior Garden members and the three of you, I trust you all to keep this information to yourselves."
Alice and Dr Stanton gasped, I realised the implications this had and voiced the question Alice was too scared to ask "Then Gresh…?"
"Hopefully abducted but we need to be realistic, I need yourself and Alice to return here immediately, you saw the people involved, you may be in danger. We will send an investigation team over to see what they can find, Dr Stanton I need you to ensure no-one else goes near Gresh's bed or the arena. I need to go, I'll see when you get back Chad, be careful." The speakerphone clicked as she hung up and Alice threw herself into my arms.
"What if they cant find him Chad?" she sobbed "Or what if something worse has happened and he's…"
"Don't say it," I cut her off "It'll take more than those three to take out Gresh, you know he wouldn't give them the satisfaction. Look at me," I put my hand under her chin, wiped away her tears and looked into her eyes "I promise you, no matter what, I will get Gresh back even if it means tearing down entire continents and killing everyone who gets in my way"
"Thank you" she said and buried her face into my chest, her shoulders still shaking with emotion.
"I'll call Trabia Garden and arrange transport" Dr Stanton said picking up her phone.
