As I walked through the Evil Forest, stepping carefully to avoid attracting any unwanted attention, I was struck by a disconcerting realisation. It was quiet, too quiet.
I had frequented the forest on a regular basis since I was a teenager, first out of curiosity, then as a part of my training fighting enemies stronger than I as part of a team gaining invaluable battle experience and finally by myself as a defender of anyone was foolish enough to travel through without taking the proper precautions.
In all those years I'd never known such an absolute silence. I'd grown to understand the forest and there was always the sound of the forest's creatures, either hunting or defending their territory from an invader, and even when the animals in the immediate area were being as quiet as possible it was normally accompanied by the sound of an unrivalled monster looking for a fight, unafraid to stalk confidently through the undergrowth, making however much of a racket it wanted. This was a silence so complete one could be forgiven for thinking they'd gone deaf.
Something unusual was happening in the Evil Forest and I didn't like it.
As I neared the co-ordinates in the letter I saw something in the distance, a large mound. I crept ever closer, using trees as cover incase of prying eyes, and what I saw made my blood turn cold. The mound was actually a heap of carcasses, piled as high as my head, consisting of local monsters. Fangs, Goblins, Plant Spiders and even a Prison Cage, all thrown on top of each other, discarded like some household rubbish…
"How long till this here fight starts then?" Two men were walking through the forest, paying more attention to their conversation than their surroundings.
"The boss says we gotta wait for all four fighters before anything happens" said one of them, short and fat and carrying a vicious dagger by his side.
"Well so long as it happens soon" said the taller of the men "It's gonna turn into some kind of Toon Town in there otherwise"
"Never know, maybe the boss is gonna let us have some hanky panky with that tart as a warm up event" the fat one replied, a disgusting smile on his face.
I stepped out from the cover of a tree behind them and drew my sword, sneaking up on them, being careful not to make a noise. I caught up to the fat one first, his extra weight causing him to lag behind. I reached around with my left hand, covering his mouth and slit his throat with my weapon, sharpened to perfection. As his body his the floor with a thud his companion turned to be greeted with my blade being thrust deep into his chest.
After putting the bodies on top of the pile of creatures I continued on to the meeting place. It seemed there was a fight planned with four competitors, myself one of them, and as I approached a clearing I heard the loud noises of a large gathering. It seemed that there was to be an audience, all of them likely to be armed, the chance of me taking Dojebon back to Alexandria was suddenly drastically reduced… I'd have to kill him, even if it meant I wouldn't be leaving alive...
