I couldn’t stop pacing while I waited for Zane at the train station, where we would leave for Lindblum. Zane had decided after the Royal Summons that I had a lot more potential and he told me that he wanted to see what else I was made of. I really couldn’t understand why he took so much interest in me, there was nothing so great about me. It’s not like I even performed that well at the Royal Summons. He was now taking me to Lindblum so I could fight some bigger and more challenging monsters than the simple things that I was used to fighting in the evil forest. The change was necessary as I didn’t seem to be getting any better with anything in the forest. Now and again I would come across something that was worth my while but they were becoming so few and far between. The reason I was pacing around nervously was not because I was going to face bigger and meaner monsters, for I knew I didn’t have to worry about anything like that while Zane was with me. Instead I was worried because I had just gotten a letter and I was frightened.
“Elizza?” I heard a voice from behind me, sounding confused and worried but that voice alone calmed my nerves even if it was only by a little bit. I turned to look at Zane and watched as worry flooded across his face.
“What’s wrong?” He asked without hesitation. I felt inside my back pocket to retrieve a little peace of paper which I handed to Zane and felt my head fall. He then read it out loud and the words once again disturbed me terribly.
“I have a friend of Thadeous' in captivity. If you do not show up in the Evil Forest at the exact coordinates that I give to you, I will have no other choice than to execute her. Sincerely, Dojebon.” he looked up at me. “ Dojebon? Is that the guy who tried to get Thadeous to attack Beardalot with some other men before their battle?” He asked, to which I nodded with my eyes still focussed on the ground.
“Oh no, poor Thadeous.” he said, looking shocked.
“I have to fight again.” I said under my breath. Zane looked at me with confusion and held onto my shoulders to make me look up at him.
“Elizza, this has nothing to do with you. This is not like the Royal Summons, this is real and dangerous.” Zane said with worry in his voice. “If you fight, you could get hurt, or…” His voice trailed off.
“What about that poor girl. I can’t let her die just because we’re worried that I might get hurt. She might die.” I said with anger in my voice as I couldn’t believe that he would ever let something like this go. After he had pushed me to take part in the Royal Summons, now he was suggesting that I should ignore this threat on an innocent girl’s life.
“I’m really sorry, Elizza, but I can’t let you do this. I can’t watch you get hurt like that.” Zane said. I pulled away from him, feeling frustrated.
“How can you even say that! You let me fight monsters all the time! You pushed me to fight in the tournament. This actually means something!” I yelled, feeling my whole body shake.
“I know, Elizza, but that was all different. You are not ready for something like this. You could get really hurt.” Zane sounding worried.
“Yeah! Well so what! a girl could die!” I yelled before storming off. Zane came running after me, trying to pull me back.
“Okay let’s just go to Lindblum for now, alright? We can talk about all of this later.” Zane said, trying to calm me down.
“You want me to just forget about it?” I said, not believing what I was hearing.
“No, not at all. I’m just saying let’s put it on hold. Just for now.” Zane replied, putting his hand on my shoulder in an effort to comfort me. I nodded, agreeing that I could use all the experience I could get.
When Zane and I were on the train, already halfway through our journey to Lindblum, we had hardly said more than two words to each other. I know that he was only looking out for me but I just couldn’t sit back and watch while someone’s life was being threatened. Still, I knew that he was only trying to protect me. Even now, I could see that he was really worried. Ever since we met that first day, he has taken care of me.
“Why have you stayed with me for so long?” I asked, before noticing him become really taken back by my question.
“Why not?” he said, after a short pause, with a cheeky smile spread across his face.
“I am serious. You have looked after me while training and taught me everything you know, seemingly for no reason what so ever.” I said not believing he would stay with me just for the hell of it. “What do you have to gain from all this, huh? What’s in it for you?”
“I have my reasons.” he said, while turning to look out of the window.
“And do I get to know any of these reasons?” I asked, but he didn’t say anything back to me. After that, we seemed to just sit in silence for the rest of the journey.
I had never been to Lindblum before and I was taken back by how grand it was. I think it took me five minutes just looking up at the height of the buildings before I heard Zane laugh at my reaction. I looked at him, smiling after seeing his mood clearly improved. He was always laughing at me and making fun at me, but I couldn’t help but find it amusing.
“So… You know I‘ve never been here before! What did you do when you first saw Lindblum?” I asked, pretending to be offended.
“Well I didn’t do that.” He laughed. “I think if I remember rightly, I ran around trying to get to the castle. I wanted to see how big it looked if I stood next to it.” My eyes widened.
“Can we do that!? Can we stand next to the castle?” I said with an excited squeak. Zane giggled for a second, and nodded.
“Okay! But can we got and get something to eat first?” he asked. I nodded.
