I felt at ease having this kind stranger offer to help me. It was as if I had my own lifeline. He was very confident with his own abilities, never seeming intimidated or nervous, not even once. The dagger he had given me enabled me to fight without magic and I felt I was improving with his advice and assistance. I found that the goblins were far less scary with him near me. Unfortunately, he told me he didn’t know much at all about magic so I was on my own with that. Now and then we encountered things which he informed me were weak against magic, so I would use my spell, concentrating hard to improve its strength. It was working, slowly but surely, I felt the power behind the spell was increasing.
“You’re right, this is a lot easier with the dagger.” I said to him, as I finished off another goblin.
He smiles at me approvingly, making me feel better in myself. As I went to return the gesture and smile back, behind him I caught a glimpse of a Marlboro. Immediately I froze; I couldn’t move or even speak, as any sound I tried to make caught up in my throat. Then, before I knew what had happened, it sent out its seeds into me. My companion heard the creature right away and jumped out of harms way, but I couldn’t do the same. I just couldn’t move. I was imprisoned. Almost immediately the pain was too much for me, causing me to pass out.
When I came too I looked around, not really seeing anything until my eyes met his.
“You need to drink this.” He said to me, the worry obvious in his voice. A he passed me the tonic, he drew closer to me and propped up my head to help me drink. My immediate reaction was to cough uncontrollably. It was disgusting.
“What is that?” I asked, astonished by the weakness in my own voice.
“It is a special medicine. It was made to get rid of any seeds that are in your body.” He explained to me as he helped me to sit up. Once more, I looked around me, my eyes working a little better now. It seemed we were near a spring. Was this still the evil forest? It couldn’t be, for to me it looked to pretty to be part of something so horrible.
“Where are we?” I asked him.
“In the evil forest still, this is where travellers rest.” He explained to me.
“Kupo!” Said a high pitched voice behind me that made me jump. I didn’t even know why it startled me because only one creature made that noise.
“Kupo are you okay?” The moogle asked. I looked up at him, seeing that he looked worried for me. “Good thing that you have him here to help, kupo.”
I turned to look up at the stranger who I believe had done more for me in just a few minutes than anyone I had ever known had done in my whole life. He was smiling back at me with relief in his eyes.
“I thought I lost you there.” He said with a little shiver in his voice.
“Kupo!” I have mail here for Elizza!” The moogle announced.
“What?” I asked as it was strange as I didn’t know anyone that would bother write to me.
“It’s from Princess Garnet.” The moogle said. Too shocked to respond, I took it from him and read it silently.
Dear Elizza,
I am honoured to ask you to take part in the Royal Summons. This event is a new tradition that I hope to hold every year within the city of Alexandria, and I would like you to be part of that. You will be competing against the moogle named Princess Bunny. I am very much looking forward to your battle. Good luck.
Princess Garnet
“What?!” I yelled in shock.
“Wow, that’s great.” Said my companion. “That’s such an honour.”
“I can’t fight in a tournament! I can hardly even fight a goblin on my own!” I cried.
“It’s okay, you have nothing to worry about. You must have done something great for them to pick you.” He reassured me.
“I have no idea how or why I have been picked for this. I have really not done anything to get noticed.” I said, showing quite clearly how worried I was with my tone. I then turned to the moogle, who was looking at me with confusion. “And what about this Princess Bunny that I have to battle against? What if it’s some sort of skilled soldier moogle, or worse what if it is more like sir Zidaine or Sir Vivi?”
“It says you are fighting Princess Bunny kupo. I’m shocked she’s taking part kupo, I didn’t know she fought. Kupo.” The moogle explained.
“Yes, but she’s a moogle!” I cried.
“A moogle shouldn’t be too hard to fight, especially one not renowned for its fighting abilities. Please stop panicking. I will help you.” He smiled, once again doing his best to reassure me.
“But moogle’s are cute and who and how can you even try to fight something so small and huggable?” I asked.
He helped me up, still smiling at me.
“I’ll take you home to get some rest, it’ll be fine. We’ll meet up again tomorrow and I’ll help train you.” He said kindly. “And it looks like I’ll have to teach you not to freeze like that. Oh and of course, if you win, I will require a share of your winnings.”
With that he laughed, and the two of us began to walk back to Alexandria, waving bye to the moogle who had already sprang away.
“I don’t even know your name.” I said, turning to face him as we walked.
He smiled at me once again, “it’s Zane.” He replied.
